Please don't waste your time watching this film like me, there are much better bad kaiju films you could watch that are much better than this. Spoilers ahead, but let's be honest, nobody will watch this film.
This movie, sucked. It was so bad...it was bad. With a interesting monster and a rather boring plot with a collection of forgettable characters, I don't recommend watching this film at all.
The human cast was....eh. YukijirŨ Hotaru returns to haunt me once more, who is Hotaru you may ask? Inspector Osaku from Gamera 1 and 2. And unlike his other films, he was arguably the most memorable character this entire film. Takeshi, who gets introduced rather early on, was barely in the film and only had a handful of scenes. This random American guy appears out of nowhere and gets taken prisoner...only to have no significance to the plot until right at the end where they use him to kill Reigo since the previous gunner guy dies.
Some dude with a eyepatch just kinda spawns in too and appears in a little bit more scenes only to die with the rest of his crew to the likes of Reigo. And speaking of dying. No one survives this film outside of maybe the Admiral and the families of the people who stayed on land, as right when the film ends they have this montage of them all dying on the Yamato during an American attack with this random guy dancing and shooting paper out of his hands.
The OST was alright, there was suspenseful music where there needed to be suspense, romantic music in the two romantic scenes in this film. Some random modern song plays while Takeshi is reading a letter from his friend and plays at the very end of the film when said friend is at their like grave thing.
There was a whole load of random noises playing in the second act of the film, eyepatch guy pops buttons with a comical popping sound to them, there were like pig squeals (?) overlapped with gunfire when they were fighting Reigo as like monster noises and stuff. It was weird. But if there was one thing I did like it was Reigo.
Much like GMK (whih Hotaru is coincidentally in) they have a scene of a mysterious old man giving an ominous "A great beast with arrive to kill you all!!!" speech and Reigo appears rather quickly after.
Reigo himself was decent, cool shark dragon Godzilla knock off thing, I liked him myself and was the only bearable part of this film. He'd just kinda show up and fuck up a few ships before leaving until his untimely demise from a point blank shot from the Yamato's cannons and a bunch of fire from the other ships where he just kinda falls to the ocean floor with blood everywhere.
It was pretty hard to get a good look at Reigo, he had little screentime, even less when in full view and when there was a close up shot the camera was super shaky and it'd make it really hard to see Reigo. Why this is I have no idea.
Horrid film, CGI sucks, ost was ok, humans were ok, Reigo was alright. All in all a 4-5/10 film, if you want to waste an hour and 20 minutes like me, go watch this film. If you're looking for a legit "so bad it's good" Kaiju film. Go watch Ape vs. Monster and don't waste your time on this film.
I genuinely couldn't figure out when this film released, it had a US Release in 2019, several sources said 2008, others said 2005. But there is two sequels, Raiga: God of the Monsters, a more traditional Godzilla kaiju knockoff. And God Raiga vs King Ohga, where Raiga and a big lava thing fight. I'm watching neither for the foreseeable future.
