Zeiram.

Pre Review.

I had some alfredo knorr for lunch. But like, this film blew me away. It might actually be film of the year for me. And yeah I get it's only four days into february but still. I doubt I could find a film that could blow me away like this again. Spoilers ahead.

The Review.

Zeiram is a 1991 Japanese tokusatsu film featuring Yuko Moriyama, Kunihiro Ida, and....Yukijiro Hotaru. The man who haunts me. Plot wise, the film is about galactic bounty hunter, Iria (Yuko), heading to Earth to fight the titular Zeiram (Mizuho Yoshida) and teaming up with two electricians (Ida and Hotaru) to fight it.

I hate to say it, but this might be a huge step-up from Hakaider. The film was directed by Keita Amemiya, creator of Garo and director of films like Kamen Rider J and Hakaider. And personally might be his best non-Garo work. I loved every part of it. The action choreography was fluid and frequent, I personally loved the first fight between Zeiram and Iria.

The highlight of the fight for me was after Zeiram broke free, the dude picked up a huge concrete pillar and chucked that shit right at Iria like General Tao.

And shockingly, I didn't find Hotaru annoying. Usually he plays the same noisy hot headed guy in every film, much like his role as Kamemiya, but I think it actually did fit here. He was the yin to Teppei's yang. And they were both equally as funny.

One of my favorite scenes in this film is when Zeiram pulls up to the two electricians when they hotwire a car, and they IMMEDIATELY run the dude over. Then he gets up and they back him up into a wall. Then his alien core tentacle thingy shoots out and attacks and Teppei is like "Man I can't aim I might hit Kamiya" and he picks UP A BICYCLE and THROWS IT ONTO THE TENTACLE. And I just busted out laughing.

The soundtrack was so much better than Hakaider's in my opinion. It was gas. I genuinely need the entire soundtrack on like my spotify or smth.

Final Verdict.

A cheesy yet decently gorey sci fi film with great action, humor, protagonist, and a baller soundtrcak. I recommend this film, not only for fans of Garo who want to see Amemiya's other works, but also to fans of Metroid who yearn for a film that's kinda like it. Cause I definitely did.

Objectively, it's an 8/10 at best but I give it a 8.5 maybe even a 9.5/10. And took me 2 hours for a film only an hour and a half long.

That's all for today and just a friendly reminder.

Just. Be. Ultra!
